What is 4-H? 4-H is a nationally recognized program aimed at providing life skills and munity engagement amongst our youth that also promotes leadership skills and provides opportunities for lifelong learning and friendships. Through hands-on learning, our members gain confidence in public speaking and build positive relationships. 4-H stands for: Head, Heart, Hands, and Health and are the cornerstones of the program.

Congratulations to the Sakura clubs on their 1st anniversary year with Wailuku Hongwanji Mission. As we say hello to the new school our girls have already prepared for the new 4-H year and ready to welcome a new club of Sakura 4-Hers,
led by Julie Petro and Jill Makii of Kindergartners and 1st graders.

The Aloha Girls held their kick-off meeting for the new 4-H year with some refreshing pineapple soft serve from 4-H parents Lehi and Claudia Livingston. The girls did a “fill my cup” activity where they came up with encouraging words and then made cards for each other. They also completed “all about me” forms and shared a little about themselves to their club mates.

In August, the Lōkahi Girls held their kick-off meeting with an officer meeting and started on their project for the year of learning how to crochet. The girls welcomed former 4-H member, Erin Mukai, and former 4-H leader, Tiffaney Mukai, who provided the girls with their first lesson on crochet, which included making a slip knot, chain, and single stitch. Thank you to Tiffaney and Erin!

The Mālama Dolphins’ club project theme for this year is cooking. They camped at the UHMC CSB on August 31-September 1 and for dinner prepared chicken and shrimp stir fry with rice. They also baked cream cheese lemon bars, ube crinkle cookies, and furikake chex mix for dessert and movie snacks. For breakfast they prepared cinnamon roll overnight oats, cooked fried rice, scrambled eggs, bacon, and Portuguese sausage using an electric skillet. They also made a fruit salad with blueberries, strawberries and pineapple. To make these recipes, they practiced knife and measuring skills, learned about food preparation, kitchen safety and worked with a variety of ingredients using difLōkahi Girls, Emma and Rylee spending time with 4-H alum Erin and her ferent cooking techniques.
