Our Japanese Language School welcomed the New Year with 書初め (Kakizome), the traditional first calligraphy practice of the year. Rooted in centuries of Japanese custom, Kakizome is a time to reflect, set intentions, and express hopes for the year ahead through mindful writing. It encourages focus, perseverance, and respect for language and tradition, values central to Japanese culture and learning.
Students began their first class by carefully choosing a kanji that reflected their wishes for the year. The characters they learned to write were: 山 (mountain) for strength, 川 (river) for ease, 和 (harmony), 光 (light), and 道 (path), each carry heartfelt meaning and aspiration, and truly showcase their thoughtful effort.
Families are invited to view the students’ Kakizome 作品 at 学芸会 (Gakugeikai) on February 27, an evening of performances, play, and a shared potluck. We look forward to celebrating this meaningful tradition together with our Gakuen community
