Reverend Shinkai Murakami will commence Obon Mairi (Obon home visitation) for Wailuku Hongwanji members starting on Monday, June 2. Members are encouraged to contact Reverend Murakami at 808-244-0406 to arrange a convenient date and time for his visit.
Each year, Reverend Murakami visits temple members’ homes to conduct an Obon service, honoring the spirits of their ancestors. This Buddhist tradition has evolved into a family reunion, where it is believed that the spirits of ancestors revisit the household altar. Families honor their ancestors and express gratitude for the contributions they made to their lives. They celebrate life and the sacred connection of all living beings. Members are reminded to clean their butsudan (family altar) and place fresh flowers for the service.
