Reverend Shinkai Murakami invites temple members, parents, and grandparents to join Wailuku Hongwanji’s annual Hanamatsuri (Buddha Day) Service and Infant Presentation Ceremony (Hanamairi or Shosan-shiki) on Sunday, April 13, starting at 8:00 a.m.
Hanamatsuri (Flower Festival) is celebrated on April 8, marking the birth of Siddhartha Gautama, who became enlightened as Sakamuni Buddha. This celebration symbolizes the release of all sentient beings from suffering and sorrow.
Infant Presentation Ceremony (Shosan-shiki): This ceremony allows families to present their child to Amida Buddha and the Sangha for the first time. Reverend Murakami emphasizes the importance of raising a child or grandchild with great thought and the gift of Dharma as one of the most precious offerings. The temple celebrates Hanamatsuri by honoring this tradition. During the ceremony, parents vow to guide their child’s spiritual growth according to the teachings of the Buddha. This commitment extends to the temple and its followers, who pledge to support and cherish the child. Each child will receive their first Onenju as a gift. Parents and grandparents interested in participating in the Infant Presentation Ceremony may contact Reverend Murakami or pick up an appreciation form at the temple office
