Special Maui Wildfire Event – Sunday, August 10

Wailuku Hongwanji will host a Special Maui Wildfire Event on Sunday, August 10, beginning at 9:00 a.m., welcoming all temple members and commu-nity friends. Sponsored by the Maui Hongwanji Council, the Honpa Hongwan-ji Mission of Hawaii, and the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanjiha Buddhist Women’s Federation of Japan, this gathering honors lives touched by the wildfires with compassion, remembrance, and resilience.

Guest Speaker: Richard Carosso. The principal of Lahainaluna High School, Mr. Carosso, will share reflec-tions on guiding his school community through the aftermath of the 2023 wild-fires. His message will center on healing, unity, and the enduring strength of Lahaina—a testament to leadership grounded in empathy and hope.

Message from Bishop Toshiyuki Umitani, Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii.Bringing spiritual depth to the program, Bishop Umitani offers words of comfort inspired by his 2025 New Year’s message. He speaks of Amida Buddha’s boundless compassion: “No one is left behind— we are all welcomed just as we are into the warmth of Amida Buddha’s embrace.” His teachings invite us to reflect on our shared humanity and interconnectedness, especially in times of recovery.

Fellowship & Luncheon: Following the service, refreshments and entertainment will be held in the Social Hall, followed by lunch.
