Obon Mairi (Home Visitation) Offered to Members

Members of Wailuku Hongwanji are invited to arrange their Obon Mairi (Obon home visitation) with Reverend Shinkai Murakami by calling 808-244-0406 to select a convenient date and time for his visit. A cherished annual tradition, Obon Mairi offers temple members the opportunity to honor the spirits of their ancestors in a deeply personal and meaningful way. Each year, Reverend Murakami visits members’ homes to conduct Obon services, celebrating this Buddhist custom that embodies reflection, gratitude, and connection

The Obon tradition has evolved into a significant family reunion, where it is believed that the spirits of ancestors revisit the household altar. Families gather to express their appreciation for the enduring contributions of their ancestors, fostering a sense of harmony and celebrating the sacred bond shared among all living beings. Members are kindly reminded to prepare for the visit by tidying their butsudan (family altar) and adorning it with fresh flowers.
