Growing, Creating, & Giving Back

In April the Lokahi Girls hosted the County 4-H Spring Fling with participants from the Shining Stars and Aloha Girls. They planned a great event, from leading the icebreakers and games to showing and helping their younger 4-H members make bunny marshmallow treats, baublebead pipe cleaner headbands and bunny ear bags. They also collected donations for the Maui Humane Society and dropped off much-needed supplies during their visit the following week.

Friends Forever prepared for next year’s project theme, Entrepreneurship, and learned about various native and non-native flowers and greenery at the UHMC garden. The girls also learned how to prepare and make lei po’o. Aunty Jo and Aunty Chelsey led the lei po’o making workshop. The girls also foraged for some foliage ahead of time. Some of the flowers that were issued to make lei po’o include spray roses, carnation, bleeding hearts, bougainvillea, baby’s breath, and crown flower. Some of the greenery that they incorporated into their lei po’o included ‘A’ali’i, Ming’s, and Palapalai fern. Each member created their own unique lei po’o. The Friends Forever 4-H Club is planning to make and sell lei and lei po’o for special occasions such as graduation and Mother’s Day during the next club year.

All clubs also particpated in the Annual County 4-H Teach-in Event. Members who have been there before showed great improvement in their demonstration skills, other first time demonstrators showed great bravery, while many of the younger cloverbuds stole the show with their smiles.
