On May 4, the dharma school students enjoyed making over 100 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as part of their community service project for “A Cup of Cold Water”, a non-profit Care-Van outreach program based at the Good Shepherd Episcopalian Church. What was very special about this project was that the students and their families, and temple members made sandwiches alongside three officers of the Maui Police Department with the Faith in Blue program. MPD’s Faith in Blue program, “part of a national initiative, focuses on building stronger relationships between law enforcement and faith-based organizations with the community”. Lieutenant Audra Sellers, Sergeant Kaena Brown, and Officer Kalani Miles, were introduced during Sunday morning service and Lt. Sellers embraced the opportunity to speak to the congregation about the program, its goals, and about other services the police department offers to our community. Teachers Laurie Fukushima-Tsai and Sandy Hirata were chairs of this wonderful project teaching interdependence, compassion, caring, and dana.
