WHM Succession Planning Committee
A sincere thank you to everyone who completed Wailuku Hongwanji’s recent Sangha Survey. Your input is very important to us, and we appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts. Below are a few highlights:
Overall, respondents shared that Wailuku Hongwanji is doing well in meeting spiritual and community needs, while also offering thoughtful ideas for continued improvement. What members value most is the Temple’s welcoming environment, sense of community, spiritual connection, and affiliate organizations, along with its cultural heritage and facilities. A large majority have been involved in one or more affiliate groups such as Dharma School, BWA, Gakuen, Scouts, Preschool, Jr. YBA, Choir, martial arts, and 4-H, reflecting the many ways people stay connected to the temple. All aspects of the Temple were rated as important or very important, with top areas including long-term sustainability, youth programs, a welcoming, family-like atmosphere, spiritual services and teachings, and temple grounds and facilities. Email was the preferred method of communication, followed by newsletters and in-person announcements, with 87% rating current communication as excellent or good.
Most respondents described their knowledge of Buddhist teachings as “some” or “pretty good,” with younger members indicating less familiarity. Interest in learning more about the Dharma was generally positive, though busy schedules were often noted as a challenge. Suggestions for improvement included volunteer coordination and support, spiritual services and Dharma teachings, and communication and information sharing.
These results reflect the collective voice of our Sangha and will help guide the Kyodan Board and Temple staff as we continue to care for and strengthen our temple for the future. An online presentation of the survey results will be held in conjunction with the Kyodan Board meeting on May 20, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.
All members of our Sangha are welcome to attend the virtual presentation. If you would like to attend, please let the office staff know by May 15, 2026, so that we may send you a weblink. Thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts and perspectives. Your input plays an important role in helping guide the future of our temple, and we look forward to your continued ideas and participation
