Buddhist Women’s Association News AUGUST 2025

The BWA had its General Membership meeting on July 13th. Attendees received updates on projects, upcoming BWA activities and other upcoming events.

BWA members participated in the General Clean Up on July 20th, cleaning the Temple and Nokotsudo. Omigaki, which is generally done on the Monday following the General Clean Up, was done on Saturday (July 19th), before the Sunday Clean Up. Thank you to all who assisted with cleaning and Omigaki.

The BWA had pre-sales of Obon food items on July 13th and July 27th. Food items, which included assorted salads, assorted rice dishes, assorted desserts, and pickled vegetables were available after service and during refreshments time. Thank you to all who purchased the various foods items.

The BWA 120th Anniversary Celebration will be held on September 21, 2025, with service starting at 9:00 a.m., followed by refreshments/lunch prepared by Carl Yeh.

The BWA 2025 Autumn Craft and Food Fair will be held on October 18th from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Vendors from Maui and Oahu, as well as affiliate organizations from the temple, will be there. Craft items and food items will be sold.There are a few vendor tables/booths available and interested vendors may contact Gwen Hiraga at (808) 280-0854.

Achara (Pickled Radish)

Anchara

15 to 20 Small Red Radishes
Wash and cross cut radishes (stopping at less ¼ inch
from the top).

Pickling Liquid:
1 ¾ cup Sugar
½ cup Heinz Vinegar
2 ½ Tbsp. Salt (Kosher)
Mix well until sugar is dissolved.

Place ingredients in a ziplock bag and add radishes. Let
sit for 2 to 3 hours, then place in a covered container and
refrigerate.
