Buddhist Women’s Association October 2024 News

The BWA held its General Membership meeting on September 15, 2024, featuring Senator Troy Hashimoto as the guest speaker. Senator Hashimoto also attended the Autumn Ohigan service. We also welcomed new members: Cora Cabral, Cheryl Takamiya, and Rachel Takamiya.

Mark your calendars for the 2024 BWA Autumn Craft and Food Fair on October 12th, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, with vendors from Maui and Oahu offering a variety of crafts and delicious food items, including Nishime, Chow Fun, Spam Musubi, rice dishes, pickled vegetables, and baked goods. The fair banner was designed by Daryl Fujiwara (SDF Design). Interested vendors can contact Gwen Hiraga or Pat Tomita.

Happy Birthday to our members celebrating in October: Ethel Fujii, Emiko Goshi, Eric Ikeuchi, Gail Iwamoto-Hamai, Patrice Matsumoto, Michiko Sato, Toshiko Sugiki, and Frances Teshima.

In addition to these events, the BWA contributed generously to the Lanai Hongwanji Mission’s Obon festival on August 31st, providing treats like Rice Krispy treats, banana bread, popcorn, party mix, and monetary donations. These contributions underscored the spirit of generosity and community central to the festival, which celebrates and honors our ancestors.

The Autumn Ohigan Service, held the following morning, was graced by distinguished guests including Senator Troy Hashimoto, Dawn Fujiwara, Aileen Cockett from Lahaina Hongwanji Mission BWA, and Reverend Soga from Waipahu Hongwanji Mission. Their presence enriched the service, highlighting the values of compassion and community
