The BWA held Obon food pre-sales on July 13 and 27, offering salads, rice dishes, desserts, and pickled vegetables. On August 1–2, members sold food, crafts, origami tsuru, and washi flower lei. Thank you to Paul Gushiken, Fred Toyama, and Richard Ouchi for preparing the Nishime, and to everyone who supported the sales.
On August 10, BWA members joined “A Gathering of Compassion and Honor,” sponsored by the Maui Hongwanji Council and others, honoring those affected by the Lahaina and Kula wildfires.
The General Membership meeting was held August 17 with updates on projects and activities.
Upcoming events include the 120th Anniversary Celebration on September 21 (service at 9:00 a.m., brunch by Carl Yeh) and the Autumn Craft & Food Fair on October 18 from 8:00 a.m.–12:00 noon. Vendor tables are full; for the waiting list, contact Gwen Hiraga at (808) 280-0854.

Creamy Coconut Cake

1 box Duncan Hines Butter Cake mix
1 14oz can Condensed Milk
1 package frozen coconut milk
1 container Cool Whip
Unsweetened coconut flakes
Prepare and bake cake according to package directions. Mix together condensed milk and coconut milk; set aside. Poke holes in warm cake. Pour milk mixture over warmed cake. Cool and chill cake. Frost with Cool Whip, sprinkle with coconut flakes. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
