Reverend Shinkai Murakami will begin “Obon Mairi” (Obon house visitation) for Wailuku Hongwanji Kyodan members beginning on Monday, June 3. Kyodan members need to contact Reverend Murakami at 808-214-3067 or contact the office at 808-244- 0406 to make arrangements for the date and time when he may visit their home.
Annually, Reverend Murakami visits temple members’ homes to conduct an Obon service as part of the custom of honoring the spirits of one’s ancestors. This Buddhist custom has evolved into a family reunion when the spirits of ancestors are supposed to revisit the household altar.
