The Wailuku Hongwanji Rakuen Club was organized in 1968. Literally translated, “raku” means “to take it easy” and “en” refers to a “field or land”. Currently, the Rakuen Club includes a membership of 105 seniors who meet once a month for church services, fun and fellowship. The club also receives guidance from the Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO) organization. MEO provides the seniors with valuable information about current events and services that may affect their lives.
Various activities are planned each month “to provide a means for Seniors to achieve a satisfactory quality of life”. Educational sessions with special speakers from the community, cooking demonstrations, BINGO games, entertainment programs (dancing, singing, magic tricks), special luncheons and excursions to places of interest are some of the activities that the members enjoy throughout the year.
