Let’s Practice the Six Paramitas

As a Spring Ohigan activity, dharma school students Kamauoha, Sammie, Logan, Kellen, and Anna shared the Six Paramitas or Perfections during the temple service on March 5. “Ohigan” means crossing over to the “other shore”. This service is held during the spring and autumn equinoxes when the days and nights are of equal length signifying harmony in nature and in our lives.
It is a time of self-reflection and honoring one’s ancestors. They shared the following: DANA OR GIVING – I shall give unselfishly to others; SILA OR DISCIPLINE – I shall follow the teachings of the Buddha; KSANTI OR PATIENCE – I shall be patient and understanding; VIRYA OR ENDEAVOR – I shall do my best in all things; DHYANA OR MEDITATION – I shall reflect on the teachings of the Buddha; and PRAJNA OR WISDOM – I shall seek the light of wisdom.

After the service and refreshments, students paired up with an adult partner and participated in an intergenerational activity constructing a Six Paramitas “boat” together. The Six Paramitas “boat” will help us to navigate the water. The more we get used to moving in the water, the better we can move the boat. It means that the more we practice the Six Paramitas, the better we will get at it
