Under the thoughtful leadership of Ms. Shelley Quipotla and Ms. Joyce Chun, our graduates were provided congratulatory gift cards. The gift cards were accompanied by a letter from the Wailuku Hongwanji Board Chair. The Chair’s message to the graduates is included on the right.
Dear Graduate:
Each year, Wailuku Hongwanji Mission recognizes graduating high school seniors who have participated in one or more of the Temple’s affiliate organization programs (e.g., Dharma School, Scouting, Japanese Language School, Martial Arts, etc.). You are one of those Class of 2023 members who have had a connection to Wailuku Hongwanji, and we thank you for being a part of our Ohana over these past several years.
Wailuku Hongwanji’s Jodo Shinshu Buddhist teachings reminds us that a multitude of causes and conditions have shaped where and who we are today. Therefore, as you turn the page from high school to higher education, the workplace or service to our country, it is natural to feel a deep sense of gratitude to those who have given you the opportunity to live life to the fullest.
In experiencing this gratitude, your parents and relatives, teachers, coaches, organization leaders and others, who have guided you over the course of years, come to mind. They have worked hard and selflessly. They have supported you with expectation of nothing in return, except an understanding that they have helped you become the best that you can be. As you reflect upon those who have helped shape your life, consider saying “Thank You” to each. They will receive these simple words with humility and recognition that in their own small way, they have helped to create a path for your future that is unlimited in possibilities.
The year 2023 will stand out as a life milestone for you. Take pride in your accomplishments. Take pride in your hopes, visions and dreams. At the same time, be reminded of the interdependent nature of life. In the days, months and years ahead, your memories of those who have supported you will not fade and your gratitude to them will not diminish. Be mindful of those who have influenced your life as it will keep you grounded in your Maui Island roots and will propel you to greater heights.
